Making a Difference
The Blue Springs Police Department is committed to meeting the ever-changing needs of our community. The
department participates in opportunities to continually build their connection with young people to proactively
and responsively support the community.
One resource is the Community and Youth Outreach Unit (CYOU). For the past 21 years, the CYOU has partnered with the Blue Springs School District to provide resources, training and support to students or residents ages 6-17.
They partner with community members to host yearly programs such as Shop with a Blue Springs Cop and National Night Out Against Crime, so youth can experience a positive relationship with law enforcement. CYOU uses three main approaches to help youth exhibiting delinquency or distress: counseling, community service and personal development.
Counseling is open to individuals, families or groups and addresses a range of issues in an attempt to start the recovery process. Youth are usually referred by police officers after criminal offenses but can also be referred by school counselors or concerned family. CYOU also offers assistance for short-term and long-term issues through crisis intervention and referrals to specialists throughout the Greater Kansas City Area.
Police officers interact with youth through Leadership Camp, decision making classes and community service.
Community service gives youth the opportunity to make amends by rebuilding their neighborhood. The Leadership Camp and the decision making classes give youth the chance to reflect on their actions and the
consequences while developing healthy communication skills and relationships.
The teamwork between counselors and Blue Springs Police officers allows CYOU to address each person with
a unique approach and provide alternative guidance to make a difference in the life of a youth on a daily basis.
