Leadership Connection

Greetings!

Yet another issue of the Insight newsletter, which comes at a time of much progress, city government news and information, and of course, plenty of snow and ice. While the temperature outside can present a number of challenges for the members of our community, rest assured the City of Blue Springs is still on the move - a community-wide movement that has quickly enabled Blue Springs to become a Community of Choice.

Roadwork and Development along South 7 Highway
Garden City BankThis past week, I drove 7 Highway out to Lee's Summit and marveled at the beautiful, completed road!  If you get a chance, take a drive out to the southern boundary and check it out! Residents traveling through the developing South area will notice a number of new building structures including the new homes at Chapman Farms and Eagle Ridge, in addition to the newly constructed Garden City Bank. It's wonderful to witness how vastly development has increased within our community. From the North to the South, Blue Springs is certainly growing.
City Council Considers City Property Maintenance Code

On Tuesday, City staff, joined by Councilman Lyle Shaver and Councilman Jeff Quibell presented recommendations for a new property maintenance code for adoption into the City's current code of ordinances. Should the Council chose to adopt the property maintenance code, the code would be the first code of this type in Blue Springs, designed to strengthen certain levels of property maintenance, making the City a clean and safe, quality place to live.

In the next couple of weeks, Community Development staff will host two public information meetings, giving residents the opportunity to discuss and learn more about the proposed ordinance. The dates of the public information meetings include Wednesday, March 5 and Wednesday, March 12 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the Public Safety Building. Copies of the proposed ordinance are available online for public viewing at www.bluespringsgov.com. Please direct any questions you may have prior to the upcoming information meetings to your respective City Council leaders.

City Receives Accolades for Annual Audit

Also at Tuesday night's City Council meeting, the City of Blue Springs was recognized for its outstanding commitment to quality fiscal reporting as presented in the annual city budget. The auditors from Cochran, Head & Co., P.C. made a presentation to Council regarding their audit findings of the City's financial condition for the year ending September 30, 2007. Auditors also noted the City is to be commended for its reporting excellence as it is one of few municipalities to have received two prestigious awards from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). I want to personally thank Christine Cates, Director of Finance and all the Finance staff for their hard work. Our City is in great financial shape, thanks to the leadership of our elected officials, our City Administrator, Eric Johnson, and our great City staff!

Renew the Blue - Right on Target

Renew the BlueIn another presentation made to City Council, Renew the Blue Co-Chairs Jeannie Lauer and Dave Wright reported the great strides the Renew the Blue group has made over the past 6 months, particularly in the areas of education, economic development, quality of life, government and community planning. I am especially looking forward to seeing more progress in the near future regarding the retaining of Blue Springs' mailing addresses for Lee's Summit zip codes. Renew the Blue has made significant progress working with local postmasters in this regard. My hat is off to both Jeannie and Dave and the entire Renew the Blue group!

RED Development Provides Landing Project Update

RED DevelopmentTuesday's City Council meeting illustrated the variety of positive projects and activities the City currently has going on. A third presentation was made by representatives of the RED Development group and the current progress being made at the Adams Dairy Landing retail development site. The RED presentation consisted of information around collaborative efforts being made with a number of retailers who may potentially locate at the Landing, and a comprehensive look at the transportation system designed for access to and throughout the retail center. I am glad to report that members of City staff, RED Development and current retailers Wal-Mart and Home Deport are working extensively with one another to ensure there are little to no traffic concerns and increased congestion associated with the new retail center.

Groundbreaking at Southridge Shopping Center

Last week, I attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the development area soon to be known as the Southridge Shopping Center, located along South 7 Highway across the street for the Dairy Queen restaurant. Among the future plans for the shopping center are a Japanese Steakhouse, which would definitely be a first and perhaps for some, a much desired cuisine favorite in Blue Springs.

Upcoming Art Show
I encourage everyone to come out to Vesper Hall the weekend of Saturday, March 8 to attend the Blue Springs Art League 30th Annual Fine Art Show. The Blue Springs Art League and the Blue Springs Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor the Annual Blue Springs Fine Art Show and Blue Springs Student Art Show.

The shows will be presented from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday, March 8, and 11 am to 4 pm on Sunday, March 9. This annual art show is a great community tradition enjoyed by families and art lovers alike. The City is honored to once again, be a part of such a fine display of community spirit.

Congratulations Blue Springs High School Girls Swimming
Blue Springs High School Girls Swim TeamIn final community news, a special 'Congratulations' is due to the Girls Swim Team of Blue Springs High School, who won their third Missouri State High School Swimming and Diving Championship title this past weekend. The Girls Swim Team has excelled in the sport of swimming on the State Championship level for a number of years, creating a legacy both in our community and in the state of Missouri. It's certainly an honor as Mayor to congratulate these ladies and the coaches and staff of Blue Springs High School for such a significant achievement.
