Celebrate
Earth Day and
|
 |
On April 22,
2009, communities around the world
will be celebrating the 39th
anniversary of Earth Day, a day in
which we are encouraged to recognize
the efforts of those who work to care
for our environment, our streets and
our local communities.
You too can participate in the
celebration of Earth Day by choosing
to Adopt-A-Street here in Blue
Springs.
Adopt-A-Street is a fun,
volunteer-based program designed to
preserve the cleanliness of Blue
Springs' streets and to help keep
these areas free of litter and trash.
City Streets Superintendent, Kyle
Gordanier, will be on site in the
lobby of City Hall on Earth Day (April
22) from 8:00 am to 11:00 a.m. to
register groups and individuals for
the Adopt-A-Street program, and to
provide additional information as to
how the program works.
For more information about adopting a
street in your neighborhood, call Kyle
at (816) 228-0195.

Happenings
Around Town
A
monthly message from your
Blue
Springs Mayor and
City Council
|
Greetings!
Hello and welcome to another
informative edition of News
Happenings Around Town, your
one-stop source for City
information and news updates,
including those items most
important to you.
Everyday, as I drive through our
City, taking in signs of new
growth, development and community
improvements, I can't help but
think 'what a great time to be a
citizen of Blue Springs!' As I get
more involved with the various
activities and groups that gather
around the city, I realize that
we're a community of great
connectivity and opportunity.
Many of the positive things we see
happening around us would not have
been possible, had it not been for
good community leadership. Citizen
groups like Renew the Blue, Stand
Up Blue Springs, Blue Springs
F.I.T., the Blue Springs Rotary
Club and the Blue Springs
Roundtable (among others) are
working hard everyday to ensure
citizens stay connected, informed
and engaged in the ongoing
activities of their community.
Yes, now is a good time to be a
citizen of Blue Springs, and an
even better time to get involved
in your community's affairs. Learn
more about how you can get
involved in various citizen
engagement groups by going to www.bluespringsgov.com.
As always, please continue sharing
this timely publication and
spreading the word about what's
good and going on in the City of
Blue Springs.

2009
Street Rehabilitation Program
The
City of Blue Springs will soon begin its
2009 street rehabilitation program which
involves milling, patching and overlay
on approximately 15 miles of residential
streets in Blue Springs, 5 miles in each
City Council District. The 2009 street
program is administered by the City's
Engineering Department and will be
executed jointly with contractor,
Superior Bowen Asphalt Company of Kansas
City, Missouri.
Each year the City identifies capital
improvement projects such as street
maintenance and rehabilitation through
its Capital Improvements Program (CIP).
This year's CIP again identified street
rehabilitation as a key priority of both
the City Council and the residents of
our community.
The 2009 street program is a reflection
of the City's efforts to respond to
these priorities with visible action and
results. The project map for the 2009
street program indicates which streets
are scheduled for maintenance this year,
barring any unforeseen circumstances.
This map can be viewed through the
City's website at www.bluespringsgov.com/09streets. |

Welcome
Panera Bread!
 Last
week, I was joined by
a number of citizens,
neighboring business
leaders and city staff
for the grand opening
of Blue Springs'
newest business,
Panera Bread on
Coronado Drive. Those
present gathered for
some morning
refreshments and a
tour of the new
facility, followed by
remarks from the
store's management
team and myself. In
the spirit of
welcoming the new
store to the City, we
also had the tasteful
experience of breaking
bread, as opposed to
the traditional ribbon
cutting. On behalf of
the entire City, I'd
like to welcome Panera
Bread, and all the new
businesses that have
recently joined us
here in Blue Springs.

City
Welcomes First In-House
Legal
Counsel
On Monday,
April 1, city staff welcomed Bob
McDonald as the first full-time City
Attorney for the City of Blue
Springs. Previously, Mr.
McDonald served as the Blue Springs
City Attorney for more than 25 years
under his private practice.
Mr. McDonald is steadily getting
acclimated to his new office
location, which is located in the
lower level of City Hall, adjacent
to the Finance Department. We are
excited to have Bob as a permanent
member of our team, and will
continue to make him feel at home
here at City Hall. It is once again
my pleasure to welcome a familiar
face, Bob McDonald.
