Creating a Quality Community |
 |
|
The City of
Blue Springs believes in creating a
sustainable and viable environment
in order to preserve the community's
quality of life.
Roadside
landscaping is a great way to
add to the value of the
community. In high traffic
areas such as Missouri Highway 7, it
provides an aesthetic appeal to the
surrounding infrastructure and
buildings, and identifies Blue
Springs as a growing and vibrant
community.
Blue Springs
would like to recognize the
following Highway 7 businesses who
have helped keep our community
looking vibrant and beautiful:

National
Night Out Sees Success in 2009
On
Tuesday, August 4, the City of Blue
Springs together with the Blue Springs
Police Department celebrated its 11th
Annual National Night Out Against
Crime (NNO) event by stepping into the
streets of downtown Blue Springs to
take a stand against crime and drug
abuse. The free family event, held
across from the Public Safety Building
at 11th and Smith Street, brought
together a gathering of more than
5,000 people including law
enforcement, civic groups,
neighborhood organizations, and more!
This year, in addition to the main
event downtown, more than 400 citizens
attended satellite events in
surrounding neighborhoods including
Shiloh, Fox Trail, Waterfield, Woods
Chapel Estates, Timbercreek, and
Primrose among others. Over 40
vendors were on display throughout the
event including representatives from
the Kansas City Metro Tips Hotline, My
Info 411, Central Jackson County Fire
Protection District, and Missouri
State Highway Patrol. Jackson County
Executive Michael Sanders was also in
attendance, commending residents for
their willingness to take an active
role in fighting crime in their
community. A special thanks goes to
the many volunteers, families and city
officials who worked so diligently to
make this years NNO event the most
successful yet.

Progress
Visible at Adams Dairy Landing
Motorists traveling
along Adams Dairy
Parkway can attest to
the considerable
movement that has
taken place at the
Adams Dairy Landing
retail development
site. Soon, residents
will be able to shop
at the first retail
store at the Landing,
Target. Target is one
of the major retail
anchors at Adams Dairy
Landing and is
scheduled to open its
doors in October 2009.
Shortly after the
store opens, residents
will see additional
retail stores
occupying the in-line
shops adjacent to
Target. Some of these
stores include Gap,
Sally Beauty Supply
Store, GameStop,
Famous Footwear,
Maurices, PETCO and
Mattress Firm.
Restaurants also
expected to locate
within the Landing are
Chipotle, Arby's and
Olive Garden. Stay
tuned to the City's
website,
www.bluespringsgov.com,
to learn more about
the progress and
scheduled store
openings at Adams
Dairy Landing.

Electronics
Recycling Event,
October
3
In
2008, the City of Blue Springs
sponsored its first two electronics
recycling events and netted more than
117,000 pounds of unwanted electronics
including personal computers, printers
and TV units.
On October 3, 2009, Blue Springs is
teaming up with Surplus Exchange of
Kansas City to sponsor another event
where you can easily recycle
electronics, working or non-working,
that you no longer need.
The event will be from 8:00 a.m. to
12:00 p.m. on Saturday October 3, at
Pink Hill Park, 1201 NW Park Road in
Blue Springs.
Charges ranging from $5 to $25 (per
item) will apply to recycle computer
monitors, televisions, stereos, VCRs,
faxes/scanners and printers. Smaller
electronics such as keyboards, mice,
personal printers, cell phones,
pagers, hand-held games and CD players
are free to recycle. Citizens will
receive specific information on
electronics recycling pricing and more
event information in a future utility
bill.
For more information or for items not
accepted at the event, call the City's
Recycling Hotline at (816) 228-0228 or
visit www.bluespringsgov.com/electronics09.

Back
to School Safety
Now
that school is back in session, it's
important that motorists exercise
caution and good judgment,
especially while driving in school
zones and residential areas where
children are walking to school or
waiting for the bus. Here are some
good tips for motorists to keep in
mind:
- Obey the
speed limit and stop for crossing
guards.
- In
a 15 mile per hour school zone,
remember passing another vehicle
is not allowed regardless of the
speed of the other vehicle.
- Do
not park or stop in a bicycle
lane.
- When
children are crossing, wait for
the crosswalks to be completely
clear before proceeding.
- Remember,
it is illegal to pass a school bus
that has its red lights flashing
and its stop-arm extended. The law
allows vehicles to pass a stopped
school bus when there is a raised
median between lanes of traffic
going the opposite direction.
Parents are
also encouraged to play a part in the
safety of their children this school
year by:
- Reminding
children to cross the street
safely at crosswalks.
- Making
sure children are properly buckled
up while riding in a vehicle, and
- Dropping
children off at designated
drop-off zones only.
