A GIS is a collection of people, computer hardware, and software used to create, maintain, and analyze spatial data. Over 85% of decisions in municipal government involve location.
The GIS Division is responsible for the design, implementation, and management of the City’s enterprise geographic information system. A centralized database ensures that all departments have access to the most current data in a standardized format, allowing for the integration of business processes. Spatial models are built in order to automate certain business processes, to query and analyze geographic information from diverse data sources, to answer important questions, examine patterns and trends, and support day-to-day operations.
Explicitly or implicitly, every department relies on geography to support its day-to-day operations, decision-making, and planning. As such, GIS becomes the foundation for decision-making and information exchange.
