1. How long has the Bike Patrol Unit been around?

The BSPD Bike Patrol Unit originated in 1997 with four officers and two bikes. Currently the team has 10 certified Bike Officers and each has an assigned patrol bike.

2. What kind of training does it take to become a Bike Officer?

All Bike Officers are certified police cyclists through International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA.) The course consists of five days of specialized instruction in learning special skills such as balance, obstacle avoidance, dismounts, curb and stair ascends and descends, special patrol techniques, road and group riding, nutrition and bike maintenance.

3. What kind of duties does a Bike Officer perform?

The Bike Patrol Unit operates nine months of the year, but is capable of riding in nearly all weather conditions. Bike Officers can perform most of duties than an officer in a patrol car can perform and in some cases, duties than an officer in a patrol car cannot.

Other Bike Unit activities include patrols at special events such as the Fall Fun Fest, high school sporting events, participation in parades, bike safety events, Bike Rodeos, and other community presentations on request.
